Share Finding great marketing internships in NYC is challenging. First off, there are countless marketing agencies in the New York City area. Secondly, there are many talented creative professionals who all want to work at great agencies to get the best work experience and kickoff their career. Where does one begin? Well aside from applying to countless internships on job boards (which you should do, in a personal way), you can do some research and proactively reach out to agencies you look up to.
Start by finding agencies you respect and admire. Look at the work they do, the clients they have, their specialties. Compile a list of around 10-15 agencies that you would love to work with. A few things to try:
Reach out to agencies employees on Linkedin
After completing your Linkedin profile (tips here) find individuals in those companies you want to work with. Request to connect with them, and be sure to add a note stating you enjoyed reading their profile, and would like to learn more about interning at their company. If they accept your invite, carefully message them saying thanks for connecting, and ask again who would be the best person to speak with, as their agency is one of your favorites, you’d like to learn more.
Visit the agencies websites
After doing your research, keep track of the marketing agencies you love by finding their job posting or career pages on their website. You can save a folder of bookmarks, so every week you ca check if there are any updates.
Follow agencies on social media
Learn as much as you can about these agencies, identify their social media accounts, and try to engage with the company there. This may get the attention of someone there, and geive you a chance to learn when their internships are available, etc.
Try to meet agency employees in person
Going to scheduled agency events, meetups, or showing up to the offices in person could allow you to meet someone there, and discuss your interest with them. Personal connections are the strongest way to get into a more popular agency because you can bypass their approval process where many applicants apply.
